Canada's Historic Win

Vancouver [Canada], June 19: In a remarkable display, Canada triumphed over Qatar with a stunning 6-0 victory during their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group B match held at home.

This victory marks Canada's inaugural win in FIFA World Cup history, making them the first host nation to score six goals in a World Cup match since Argentina's 6-0 win against Peru in the 1978 Second group stage.

Jonathan David made headlines by becoming only the second player to achieve a World Cup hat-trick for a team outside Europe or South America, following the USA's Bert Patenaude, who scored the first hat-trick in 1930 against Paraguay. Additionally, he is the first Canadian to net a hat-trick in World Cup history.

The scoring began with Cyle Larin in the 16th minute, followed by David's remarkable hat-trick, which he completed with goals in the 29th minute, first-half stoppage time (45+3), and the final moments of the match (90+2).

Canada continued their offensive prowess in the second half, with Nathan Saliba scoring in the 64th minute. Qatar's woes were compounded when Mohammed Mani inadvertently scored an own goal in the 75th minute.

Qatar faced further challenges during the match, being reduced to 10 men in a heated encounter where Canada maintained total dominance.

Despite some fleeting resistance from Qatar, Canada controlled the game from start to finish, securing a decisive victory that bolsters their standing in Group B.

In a concerning moment, Canadian midfielder Ismaël Kone was carried off on a stretcher in the second half due to a serious injury sustained from a heavy challenge by Qatar's Assim Madibo. The tackle raised immediate alarm, prompting players to call for medical help as they surrounded Kone while he received treatment.

Following a VAR review, Madibo received a straight red card for dangerous play and was sent off, leaving Qatar with only nine players after Homam Al Amin had already been dismissed in the first half.

Kone received a warm round of applause from the BC Place crowd as he was carefully escorted off the field for further evaluation.

Despite this setback, Canada maintained their grip on the match. Nathan Saliba, who replaced Kone in the 57th minute, celebrated his fourth goal by lifting Kone's shirt in tribute.

This incident, while concerning, did not overshadow Canada's dominant performance, which represents a significant step forward in their World Cup journey.
