Cameron Green's Fitness in Question Ahead of Second Test Against South Africa
Concerns Over Cameron Green's Availability
Durban, South Africa - October 15: Andrew McDonald, the head coach of the Australian cricket team, has expressed uncertainty regarding Cameron Green's participation in the upcoming ICC World Test Championship match against South Africa. The talented all-rounder is still in recovery from an abdominal injury as the team gears up for the match on Sunday in Gqeberha.
Green was absent from the first Test in Durban, where Australia achieved a significant 214-run victory, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. His potential return had sparked optimism about bolstering Australia's batting lineup for the crucial second Test at St George's Park.
However, McDonald noted that the 27-year-old must fulfill several fitness criteria before he can be considered for selection, leaving his status uncertain as Australia aims to build on their strong start.
"Green is making good progress. He has a few hurdles to clear in the next few days. He will continue to advance, and recovery from a soft tissue injury can happen quickly," McDonald stated, according to the ICC website.
In positive news for the team, reserve wicketkeeper Josh Inglis has shown signs of recovery after missing the first Test due to a finger injury sustained during last month's ODI series against South Africa.
His return would be a significant advantage for Australia as they prepare for the second Test in Gqeberha, potentially enhancing their selection options.
"Josh has been practicing during the Test match in the nets, and that has gone well," McDonald mentioned.
"The focus will be on his comfort with the splint and how he progresses. He will have batting sessions against bowlers in PE (Gqeberha), and we will gather more information from that."
Cooper Connolly may also be considered for the second Test after missing the first due to a head cold prior to the match.
His ability to provide a quality spin-bowling option could be vital for Australia, especially since Green may not be able to bowl even if he returns as a specialist batter.
The roles of Nic Maddinson and Beau Webster remain uncertain as Australia evaluates their options ahead of the match in Gqeberha. McDonald emphasized that captain Pat Cummins desires flexibility in the batting order, leaving several selection decisions open as the team seeks to extend their 1-0 series lead.
"The external perspective might suggest that specific roles are necessary at certain times, but we are more adaptable than that. We will assess our needs for the next Test, considering the different surface we might encounter," he concluded.
Australia's squad includes: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green, Sam Harper, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nic Maddinson, Nathan Lyon, Michael Neser, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Beau Webster.
