Historic Performance by Brian Brobbey

In a remarkable display during the 2026 World Cup Group F match, Netherlands forward Brian Brobbey etched his name in the record books by scoring the fourth fastest brace in FIFA World Cup history. His two goals came in a swift 16 minutes and 12 seconds, contributing to the Netherlands' impressive 5-1 victory over Sweden.

Brobbey's first goal, netted just 4 minutes and 58 seconds into the match, ranks as the fourth-quickest goal in the Netherlands' World Cup history, and the fastest since Robin van Persie's goal against Brazil in 2014, which was scored in just 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The record for the fastest brace is held by Germany's Lukas Podolski, who scored in 11 minutes and 35 seconds during the 2006 World Cup, followed by Brazil's Ronaldo Nazario at 12 minutes and 16 seconds in 2002, and England's Gary Lineker at 13 minutes and 46 seconds in 1986, as noted by Opta's X handle.

Brobbey's early goals placed him among an elite group of players who have scored a brace within the first 17 minutes of a World Cup match in the last four decades, joining the ranks of Podolski and Ronaldo.

Teammate Cody Gakpo also shone in the match, scoring two goals in the second half, which allowed him to equal Robin van Persie's record for the most goals scored by a Netherlands player in World Cup group stages, totaling five.

This victory further solidified the Dutch team's impressive records, extending their unbeaten streak in World Cup group-stage matches to 18 and their overall unbeaten run in World Cup matches to 14.

Brobbey, who replaced Crysencio Summerville from the previous match against Japan, opened the scoring in Houston with a well-executed goal following a coordinated play involving Tijjani Reijnders and Gakpo, who assisted from the left.

Although Sweden created several opportunities towards the end of the first half, Gakpo took charge after halftime, scoring twice within a span of seven minutes to secure the lead for the Netherlands.

Anthony Elanga managed to score for Sweden just before the hour mark, but substitute Summerville capped off the match with a stunning goal in the 89th minute, keeping the Dutch side firmly in the race for the knockout stage.
