McCullum's Concerns for Stokes

London [UK], June 15: Brendon McCullum, the head coach of the England men's cricket team, has shared his worries regarding Test captain Ben Stokes, who has been ruled out of the upcoming second Test against New Zealand, as reported by a leading sports news outlet.

Stokes, along with teammate Gus Atkinson, was excluded from the squad after violating the team's midnight curfew following their victory in the first Test at Lord's.

Reports indicate that after the win at Lord's, both players were involved in an incident where a Saracens rugby player struck the team's security liaison officer, necessitating medical attention. Consequently, they have been omitted from the selection for the second Test while the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Cricket Regulator conduct investigations.

As the second Test approaches, set to commence on Wednesday, McCullum expressed his disappointment over the situation involving Stokes and Atkinson. He conveyed that his initial feelings transitioned to deep concern for Stokes specifically, emphasizing the need to support both players while recognizing their failure to meet the team's standards.

“Hearing about this was incredibly disappointing. In roles like this, you must try to separate the actions from the individual. However, after speaking with Ben and Gus, my predominant emotion shifted to worry for Ben in particular. The focus now is on how we can support them, while also acknowledging they have not adhered to our expected standards,” McCullum stated.

He further noted, “We cannot overlook this, and we will address it through the appropriate channels. My priority is to ensure we support these players, especially Ben, during this challenging time.”

McCullum commended Stokes for his exceptional leadership over the past four years, highlighting his role in shaping the team's culture and achieving significant success. He mentioned that decisions regarding Stokes' future as captain will be made later, but are not the immediate concern.

“Reflecting on the last four years, I have witnessed Ben's remarkable capabilities as a captain and player. He has significantly contributed to our environment and has enjoyed tremendous success. I feel fortunate to have worked closely with him during this period. Future decisions will come in due time,” McCullum added.

He reiterated that the primary focus is on Stokes' well-being, emphasizing the need for the team to rally around him. McCullum stated that discussions about the situation will occur later, and for now, he is committed to regularly checking in on Stokes.

“The main concern is ensuring Ben is alright. We must support him and, in time, we will address the necessary decisions. For now, my priority is to keep in touch with him,” he concluded.

In the ongoing three-match Test series against New Zealand, England secured victory in the first match and aims to clinch the series in the second Test.
