Emotional Farewell to Ben Stokes

Nottingham [UK], June 30: Brendon McCullum, the head coach of England, expressed heartfelt sentiments regarding Ben Stokes' retirement from international cricket, emphasizing the significant influence Stokes had as both a captain and a player throughout his career.

McCullum characterized Stokes as a natural leader, someone whom his teammates instinctively look up to, and noted that his absence will be profoundly felt.

Initially, McCullum attempted to persuade Stokes to reconsider his decision but soon recognized that Stokes had found peace with it. Reflecting on their four-year collaboration, he described it as a "real privilege," highlighting how Stokes has transcended the sport, impacting lives both on and off the field.

"Stokes has influenced many, not just during his captaincy but throughout his entire career. He is a leader who inspires others. His impact over the past four years has been significant, and he will be missed. When he informed me of his retirement yesterday, I tried to convince him otherwise, but it was clear he had made up his mind and was at peace with it. This realization brought a sense of sadness, as we have shared this journey for four years. It has been a true honor to work alongside Stokesy during this time. He seemed content with his decision and has managed to elevate cricket into broader societal realms," McCullum stated.

In the third Test at Trent Bridge, New Zealand, led by Tom Latham, triumphed over England by 160 runs, clinching a 2-1 series victory against the hosts on Monday.

This match also marked the conclusion of Ben Stokes' international career, as he faced his first home series defeat both as a player and captain.

Joe Root also shared his emotional reflections on Stokes' retirement, reminiscing about their long-standing friendship that began in childhood and expressing how strange it will be not to see him in the England setup.

Root chose not to persuade Stokes to continue, instead opting to support him as a friend and respecting his decision. He remarked that if a player is not in the right mindset to enjoy the game, stepping away is the best choice.

Root emphasized that Stokes will be sorely missed in the dressing room as a leader, a key player, and a close friend, describing his retirement as "the most Ben Stokes thing ever."

"I have played cricket with and against Ben since we were 12. He taught me my first swear word during our first match, and we have maintained a good relationship ever since. It will be odd to arrive in this environment and not see him. (Did he try to talk Stokes out of it?) I focused on listening and being the best mate I could be. You want to enjoy cricket and play for the right reasons, and if you’re not in the right space, it’s probably time to step away. I hope he finds peace with his decision. I will certainly miss him, and the dressing room will feel his absence as a leader and a great friend. It was truly the most Ben Stokes thing ever," Root added.
