Breaking the Asian Games Jinx: A Personal Journey of Triumph and Coaching Philosophy
A Long-Awaited Victory at the Asian Games
Finally, the burden of the Asian Games has been lifted off my shoulders. This medal was a long-held aspiration, and I am thrilled to have broken the streak of disappointment at Aichi-Nagoya. Japan has consistently been a place of success for me, having secured an Olympic silver in Tokyo 2020, and once again, I returned home with a medal in hand.
Lessons Learned Through Adversity
The life of an athlete is filled with moments of introspection and response. The Asian Games have imparted numerous lessons, with the most significant being the importance of perseverance. My resolve has been tested repeatedly, especially when serious injuries threatened to derail my career.
Overcoming Setbacks
After missing the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta due to a lower back issue, I faced another setback at the 2023 Games in Hangzhou due to a severe thigh and hip injury. However, at Aichi-Nagoya, I was in peak condition, thanks to the exceptional preparation from my coach, trainer, and physiotherapist.
The Coaching Debate: Indian vs. Foreign
The discussion surrounding the preference for Indian or foreign coaches is always lively. In various Olympic sports in India, foreign coaches have been brought in to enhance performance, particularly in boxing and wrestling. Personally, I have never felt the necessity for a foreign coach, as I firmly believe in the capabilities of Indian coaches.
The Role of National Coaches
Under the guidance of national coach Vijay Sharma, my career has seen significant growth. The bond formed during challenging times strengthens the coach-athlete relationship. Since 2014, I have been fortunate to be under his mentorship. This raises the question: should we continue to seek foreign coaches or invest in our own?
Future of Coaching in India
The new Khelo India Scheme aims to revolutionize sports development over the next five years, introducing a National Coach Accreditation Board. Similar to the National Sports Governance Act, this initiative will standardize coach qualifications and ensure they are equipped to nurture young talent effectively.
Grassroots Coaching: The Foundation of Success
It is crucial to have competent coaches at the grassroots level in districts and panchayats. A good coach not only trains but also makes sports enjoyable, akin to a playschool environment. We need coaches who can teach the fundamentals without overwhelming methodologies, fostering a love for health and fitness.
The Importance of Tailored Coaching
Coaching is not a quick-fix solution. For sustainable success, we need homegrown coaches who can impart foundational knowledge and understand the differences between male and female athletes. While we have knowledgeable coaches, they must be given opportunities to enhance their skills and effectiveness.
The Coach-Athlete Relationship
A medal, regardless of the competition level, is a product of the relationship between an athlete and their coach. I am a testament to this. While no foreign coach can guarantee an Olympic medal, they should not be blamed for failures. However, I believe in the potential of Indian coaches, and foreign specialists can be utilized to bolster our support staff, particularly in injury management.
Integrating Technology and Sports Medicine
The revamped Khelo India Scheme emphasizes the integration of technology, sports medicine, and athlete care. For elite athletes, recovery and rehabilitation are crucial for optimal performance. In my journey, Dr. Aaron Horschig played a pivotal role before the Tokyo Olympics.
The Value of Specialized Support
Dr. Horschig, a sports physical therapist and former weightlifter, had a unique approach to treating my injuries, particularly my shoulder and lower back issues. If we can combine specialists like him with our Indian coaches, the support system will become significantly more effective. I reiterate that Indian coaches are capable, and how we leverage foreign expertise to enhance our support ecosystem will be crucial moving forward.
