Empowering Women Through Sports

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], April 23: Blanka Vlasic, a double Olympic medallist and the International Event Ambassador for the TCS World 10K Bengaluru 2026, spoke to the media about the significant role of sports in empowering women as she prepares for the 18th edition of the World Athletics Gold Label race.

The 42-year-old Croatian high-jumping legend shared insights about her personal journey in athletics, the evolving sports landscape in India, and her encouraging words for participants ahead of the race.

With an impressive turnout of 36,000 participants, including over 9,000 women, Vlasic discussed how sports can transform lives, particularly for women. She stressed the importance of sports in fostering confidence and self-esteem.

“For me, sport is an integral part of daily life. It influences not only physical health but also mental well-being and self-assurance. It’s crucial for women to engage in activities that bolster self-belief. Achieving one goal opens the door to realizing that more goals are attainable. It’s inspiring to witness the increasing number of women in India embracing running,” Vlasic remarked.

Reflecting on her life after retirement, she noted the simplicity and accessibility of running as a means to maintain an active lifestyle.

“Post-career, I sought a way to remain fit and healthy, and running was the simplest option—just lace up your shoes and go. It’s straightforward yet incredibly impactful. The beauty of running lies in the shared experience, where individuals from diverse backgrounds unite with a common purpose. That sense of community enhances the joy of the activity,” she added.

Discussing India's aspirations in sports and the possibility of hosting the Olympics in 2036, Vlasic emphasized how major events can inspire future athletes.

“Hosting a significant event like the Olympics can spark interest among children and motivate them to pursue sports. Such momentum is vital for nurturing future talent. If India is ready to make a bid, then it should definitely consider it,” she stated.

On the advancements in Indian athletics, she commented, “From my discussions and what I’ve observed, the progress in Indian athletics over the past decade has been remarkable. I’m always willing to assist in any way I can.”

As race day approaches, Vlasic encouraged participants to savor the experience.

“There’s a saying that pressure is a privilege. Feeling pressure indicates that you’ve dedicated your time and energy to something meaningful. So, embrace it, relish the emotions, enjoy the moment, and don’t stress too much about the outcome,” she advised.
