New Delhi, July 28: Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya extended his congratulations to Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi for securing a bronze medal in the women's 58kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. He praised her role in enhancing India's medal count at the event.
In a post shared on X, Mandaviya expressed, "Grit, grip, and glory! Congratulations to Bindyarani Devi for winning a Bronze medal in the Women’s 58kg category, marking India’s fifth medal in Weightlifting. Continue to make the nation proud!"
Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also recognized Bindyarani's accomplishment, congratulating her via a post on X.
He stated, "By clinching the bronze medal in the women’s 58kg weightlifting event at #CWG2026, Bindyarani Devi has brought honor to our nation. Heartfelt congratulations on this outstanding achievement and best wishes for a bright future. Her success exemplifies hard work and unwavering courage."
The 27-year-old athlete added another medal to her Commonwealth Games accolades with a strong performance in the women’s 58kg competition, finishing behind Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, who took gold with a record total of 229kg, and Canada’s Ann Sophie Taschereau, who earned silver with 215kg.
Bindyarani began the snatch phase with a composed approach, as her coaches adjusted her opening attempt from 85kg to 83kg. She successfully lifted 83kg, followed by 85kg and 87kg, finishing the snatch phase tied with England’s Eliza Pratt but ahead on countback.
In the clean and jerk, her initial lift of 110kg was disqualified after a jury review due to an elbow buckle during the jerk. Demonstrating remarkable poise, she returned to successfully lift 112kg on her second attempt, bringing her total to 199kg and briefly placing her in silver-medal contention. She attempted 116kg for a personal best but was unable to complete the lift, with her total of 199kg ultimately earning her the bronze medal.
This podium finish marks Bindyarani's second medal at the Commonwealth Games, following her silver at the Birmingham 2022 Games. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it comes after her recovery from a knee injury in 2023 and her transition between the 55kg and 58kg weight classes.
With Bindyarani's bronze, India's medal tally at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games now stands at six, which includes one in para powerlifting. To date, India has secured one gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.
India's medalists at Glasgow 2026 include Mirabai Chanu (gold, weightlifting), Rishikanta Singh (silver, weightlifting), Muthupandi Raja (silver, weightlifting), Gyaneshwari Yadav (silver, weightlifting), Bindyarani Devi (bronze, weightlifting), and Jhandu Kumar (bronze, para powerlifting).
