Financial Support for Gopalganj Taekwondo Athletes

Patna (Bihar) [India], September 6: On Sunday, Bihar's Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced a financial grant of Rs 2 lakh each for Gopalganj taekwondo athletes Bhawani Singh and Riya Singh, who have been chosen to represent India at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championship 2026 in South Korea.

Choudhary shared this news on X, highlighting that the athletes were struggling financially to cover the costs associated with their participation in this prestigious event.

“It is a matter of pride for both Bihar and the nation that talented athletes Bhawani Singh and Riya Singh will represent India at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championship 2026 in South Korea. They faced financial challenges in attending the competition and had requested assistance for travel and other essential expenses. In response to their appeal, I am pleased to announce that each will receive Rs 2 lakh. I wish them the best of luck in bringing honor to our state and country,” he stated.

The championship is set to take place from September 16 to 20 in Chuncheon, South Korea.

Taekwondo Poomsae involves a series of choreographed movements that include blocks, punches, and kicks, simulating defense against multiple attackers.

Bhawani, from Ratansarai village, and Riya, who comes from Rampur Sadaun, both hail from the Barauli block in Gopalganj district. Their selection for the national team followed impressive performances in national competitions and rigorous training with their coaches.

Bhawani specializes in freestyle poomsae and has secured medals in four national competitions, which contributed to his selection for the Indian team.

Riya has also made a name for herself at both state and national levels, earning multiple medals in taekwondo and receiving the Bihar State Sports Award for her achievements.

The duo had reached out to the Bihar government for financial help to manage their travel and other expenses for the championship in South Korea.

With the Chief Minister's approval of their request, the financial aid of Rs 2 lakh each is anticipated to significantly support them as they prepare for their international debut.
