Bhuvneshwar Kumar Returns to the National Team

Ranchi (Jharkhand) [India], October 8: Sitanshu Kotak, the batting coach for India, emphasized that Bhuvneshwar Kumar's extensive experience and impressive performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have significantly contributed to his return to the national squad after a four-year hiatus.

Kotak pointed out that with Jasprit Bumrah unavailable and several emerging bowlers participating in England, the selectors likely recognized the necessity for a seasoned player, especially with the upcoming series in New Zealand on the horizon.

Bhuvneshwar's international career had been on pause since the T20 World Cup semi-final against England in Adelaide in 2022. Now, at 36, he has made a much-anticipated comeback to the national team following a series of strong performances in the IPL.

Speaking to reporters ahead of India's second T20I against the West Indies in Ranchi, Kotak stated, “In England, I felt that with Bumrah absent and many young bowlers in play, experience is invaluable. While the young bowlers are performing well and earning their spots, there comes a time when experience is crucial. This could be one reason for Bhuvneshwar's selection.”

He further added, “Bhuvneshwar has excelled in the IPL over the past two seasons. The selectors might have considered his experience beneficial for the conditions in New Zealand. His consistent performance has been impressive, which likely influenced their decision.”

Bhuvneshwar has enjoyed a revival with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL, claiming 45 wickets in 31 matches with an average of 22.55 and an economy rate of 8.52, contributing to the franchise's consecutive titles in 2025 and 2026.

During the IPL 2026 season, he ranked as the second-highest wicket-taker, securing 28 wickets in 16 matches with an average of 17.89 and an economy rate of 7.95.

The tour is set to commence with five T20Is starting October 22, followed by five ODIs and two Test matches.
