Bhuvneshwar Kumar Reflects on Comeback and Young Talent After Series Victory
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Insights Post-Series Win
Wellington [New Zealand], October 27: After India's impressive series victory against New Zealand in Wellington, pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar shared his thoughts on returning to the national team after a four-year hiatus and the importance of mentoring younger bowlers.
India achieved a remarkable series win, thanks to explosive performances from Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who led the team to chase down 199 runs in just 13.2 overs, marking a 3-0 lead in the series with two matches remaining. However, Bhuvneshwar's performance has been less than stellar, conceding over 40 runs in each of his four-over spells and claiming only one wicket across three matches.
In the post-match press conference, Bhuvneshwar discussed his role in guiding younger players like Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Prince Yadav. He noted, “The young players are eager to learn. They may be new, but they bring experience from the IPL, which is also a T20 format. Everyone is keen to absorb knowledge. We share insights whenever possible, but it’s crucial to recognize that T20 cricket has evolved significantly. When I debuted in T20Is, it was more about easing into the format. Now, maturity is essential. These bowlers have demonstrated their capabilities in the IPL, and I can offer my experiences regarding general play and conditions in New Zealand, but they have performed admirably so far.”
Reflecting on his return, Bhuvneshwar expressed, “It’s a great feeling to represent India again after being away for so long. I’m grateful for the opportunity and am focused on performing well.”
In the match, India won the toss and chose to bowl first. After dismissing Tim Seifert (2) early, Finn Allen (40 off 25 balls, including five fours) and Daryl Mitchell built a solid 86-run partnership for the second wicket, bringing New Zealand back into contention. Glenn Phillips (17 off 14) struggled after two consecutive fifties, while Mitchell (89* off 52 balls, with five fours and five sixes) partnered with Bevon Jacobs (39* off 23 balls, with four boundaries and a six) to guide the Kiwis to a total of 198/3 in 20 overs.
Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel, and Nitish Kumar Reddy each took a wicket for India.
During the chase, Abhishek and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (45 off 19 balls, with four boundaries and four sixes) launched an aggressive assault, propelling India to 133 runs in just 7.1 overs. Despite a minor setback, Naman Dhir's (4*) final hit secured the victory for India by eight wickets with 40 balls remaining, sealing the series at 3-0.
