Bhartpreet Singh's Inspiring Journey from Struggles to Bronze Medal Glory

A Medal with a Meaningful Backstory

Every medal carries a unique narrative, and Bhartpreet Singh's bronze medal in discus throw at the Asian U-23 Athletics Championships, held on July 9 in China, symbolizes more than just athletic achievement. It represents the determination of a son who ventured into sports with a heartfelt desire to alleviate the financial strain on his widowed mother.

Reflecting on his motivations, Bhartpreet shared, "I thought that by leaving home, I could lessen the burden of feeding one more person."

Originating from Shahbad village near Batala, Bhartpreet's journey was not fueled by dreams of fame but rather by a pressing need to support his family. "I participated in the trials in Jalandhar, hoping that if I got selected, it would reduce the food expenses at home. Those who were chosen received free lodging and meals. My mother was already facing challenges raising us, and my sister's education was an additional concern. I believed this could provide her some relief," he explained.

Overcoming Adversity

Today, Bhartpreet stands tall among Asia's elite athletes after clinching the bronze medal in the discus throw at the Asian U-23 Athletics Championships. His life took a tragic turn when he was just eight years old, losing his father, a Punjab Police constable, which left the family in turmoil. His mother took on a job that barely paid Rs 8,000 a month to support Bhartpreet and his younger sister.

When Bhartpreet arrived for the trials in Jalandhar, his future coach, Baldeep Singh, recognized more than just his athletic potential. "He had a remarkable physique, but he came in worn-out slippers. When I inquired about his father, he quietly revealed that he had lost him at a young age. I immediately grasped the financial hardships he faced," Baldeep Singh recalled, who coaches at the Centre of Excellence, Punjab Sports Department.

A Shift in Perspective

Initially, Bhartpreet's primary aim was to ease the financial burden at home. However, witnessing his roommate's success as a champion shifted his perspective. "He was a close friend, and everyone admired him after his victory. That inspired me to take sports seriously and earn that respect for myself," Bhartpreet stated.

This pivotal moment marked a significant change in his athletic career. One of his most treasured items is a train ticket he once could not afford. Before his first Junior National Championships in Guwahati, coach Baldeep Singh arranged his travel. "I still keep that ticket safe. It was my first experience traveling in an AC coach. That was when I realized how much my coach was investing in me, and I needed to work hard to honor his belief in me."

Sacrifices and Achievements

Bhartpreet's mother also made significant sacrifices. When he needed his first pair of professional throwing shoes, she sold her gold bangles to purchase them, a sacrifice that proved worthwhile. Bhartpreet later achieved gold at the 2023 Asian U-20 Athletics Championships and steadily advanced in both national and international competitions. "Winning the Junior Nationals and the Asian championship made me feel like I had truly arrived," he remarked.

Currently, Bhartpreet serves as a Petty Officer in the Navy, but his aspirations extend beyond medals. "My mother still earns around Rs 13,000 a month, and we live in a rented home. My biggest dream is to buy our own house for her," he expressed.
