Australia's Triumph at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026

London [UK], July 6: Star player Beth Mooney expressed that the dedication and growth of the Australian team over the past year made their victory at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 even more rewarding. Mooney played a pivotal role in the final against England, earning both the Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament accolades.

She anchored Australia’s successful chase of 151 runs, scoring a steady 64 off 49 balls, leading the defending champions to a seven-wicket win with 17 balls remaining at Lord’s, marking their seventh Women’s T20 World Cup title.

Reflecting on her achievements, Mooney stated, “This has been on our radar for a while. It’s great to be part of the squad and contribute as an opener and wicketkeeper. There’s been significant evolution in our group over the last year, filled with growth and enjoyable moments. It’s wonderful to cap it off with this victory.”

After Australia’s previous disappointments in the last two ICC events, she added, “I’m just thrilled to be here. It’s well-known that we didn’t reach this stage in the last two tournaments, so waking up today feeling grateful for our progress is special.”

Mooney also commended the new captain, Sophie Molineux, for her leadership throughout the unbeaten campaign. “She’s been incredible—calm and composed, never flustered. Her unique approach to captaincy has made her a fantastic leader, and it’s great to see her shine in this role,” Mooney remarked.

The seasoned wicketkeeper-batter also shared insights about her performance behind the stumps, including a notable stumping of England’s opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge. “I felt a bit rusty at the start of the tournament, but with the support from our coaching staff, I’ve improved significantly. It’s been rewarding to maintain consistency with the gloves and contribute on the field,” she explained.

Discussing her strategy during the title-winning chase, Mooney noted, “As I mentioned in the semi-final, it’s crucial to stabilize the dugout during the powerplay in significant matches. Voll gave us a strong start, and although she had an unfortunate dismissal, Phoebe came in and hit the ball well from the get-go. I aimed to keep the momentum going and ensure we stayed ahead.”

Australia bounced back quickly after losing opener Georgia Voll in the second over, with Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield forming a crucial partnership that propelled the team to 62/1 at the end of the powerplay, surpassing the 100-run mark by the 11th over.

Litchfield contributed a solid 48 runs, while Mooney achieved her ninth Women’s T20 World Cup half-century before Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner finished the chase.

Earlier, Australia’s disciplined bowling unit limited England to 150/4, despite captain Nat Sciver-Brunt’s unbeaten 58 and Freya Kemp’s 44 runs. Annabel Sutherland, Sophie Molineux, Lucy Hamilton, and Kim Garth each took a wicket, laying the groundwork for another remarkable World Cup victory.
