Power Struggle in Bengal Cricket

A significant conflict has erupted within the cricketing community in Bengal. Avishek Dalmiya, the former president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and son of the esteemed cricket administrator Jagmohan Dalmiya, is embroiled in a public dispute with the current leadership, which enjoys the support of former Indian captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. The contention revolves around allegations of corruption.

The situation escalated last week when Dalmiya addressed a letter to Dr. Indranil Khan, the newly appointed Sports Minister of West Bengal. This correspondence followed rumors suggesting that a CAB official had accepted bribes for player selections in local teams. In his letter, Dalmiya urged the newly elected BJP government to intervene and proposed the establishment of a dedicated helpline for players and their families to report instances of bribery, cheating, and unfair practices.

Response from Sourav Ganguly's Camp

Sourav Ganguly Camp Hits Back

The current CAB administration, led by Sourav Ganguly, promptly responded to Avishek Dalmiya's claims with a robust three-page letter, which Ganguly personally delivered to the Sports Minister. This letter, co-signed by other prominent officials, categorically refuted any allegations of widespread corruption within the Bengal cricketing organization. To uphold their integrity, the group emphasized Ganguly's longstanding reputation as a player, captain, and cricket administrator.

Moreover, the Sourav Ganguly camp accused Dalmiya of engaging in political maneuvering. They pointed out that the CAB has an established legal framework for addressing complaints, overseen by a former judge of the Kolkata High Court. Instead of utilizing this official mechanism, they contended that Dalmiya opted to approach the government and the public, aiming to tarnish the image of the current CAB leadership. CAB officials also criticized Avishek Dalmiya for what they perceived as hypocrisy, suggesting that the organization he led until 2022 was not free from corruption itself.
