Ben Stokes' Comeback to the England Team

Ben Stokes, the captain of the England cricket team, is poised to make his return after missing the second Test due to a nightclub incident that occurred following the team's victory over New Zealand in the series opener at Lord's. The prominent all-rounder, along with teammate Gus Atkinson, was unavailable for selection in the ongoing Test at the Oval as an investigation into the matter is underway. To provide some context, both players violated a midnight curfew that was established after the team's poor performance in the Ashes, which was marred by alcohol-related issues during tours of New Zealand and Australia.

Stokes and Atkinson were involved in a confrontation with a rugby player at a London nightclub, where the Saracens rugby team was celebrating the end of their season. According to reports from BBC Sport, while no official decision has been reached yet, preparations are being made for both players to return, allowing Stokes to lead the team in the final Test of the series scheduled for June 25 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

Both Stokes and Atkinson are expected to participate in the County Championship matches for Durham and Surrey against Northamptonshire and Glamorgan on June 19. Following the nightclub incident, there were speculations that Stokes might contemplate retirement from international cricket due to strained relations with the England Cricket Board (ECB), but those rumors have been quelled for the time being.

In Stokes' absence, Joe Root has taken over the captaincy for the Oval Test. The former captain was chosen over vice-captain Harry Brook, who also leads the ODI and T20I teams and had a similar incident in New Zealand last year. This is not the first time Stokes has faced controversy related to a nightclub; he was previously suspended for 11 months before being acquitted of affray. His first match back for England after that incident was against India in August 2018, also at Trent Bridge.
