Ben Stokes Set to Return as England Captain for Third Test Against New Zealand
Stokes' Comeback Confirmed by McCullum
In a recent announcement, England's head coach Brendon McCullum revealed that Ben Stokes will rejoin the squad and take back the captaincy for the upcoming third Test against New Zealand next week. The official team lineup is expected to be disclosed later today.
McCullum highlighted that their collective vision for English cricket remains intact, referring to the recent events as a necessary phase rather than indicative of any underlying issues.
Stokes, along with seamer Gus Atkinson, had stepped down from participating in the second Test due to disciplinary matters, paving the way for their return to the team.
“Ben will be back, and we’ll announce the squad this afternoon. Everyone is thrilled about his return as captain,” McCullum stated, as reported by a sports media outlet.
He further emphasized, “We have consistently supported Stokes. Over the past four years, we have collaborated for the advancement of English cricket, sharing the same vision and objectives, which remain unchanged. It was simply a process we needed to navigate.”
Looking ahead to the third Test against New Zealand, McCullum expressed enthusiasm about the chance for England to clinch a series victory against a formidable opponent. He noted that achieving this would be a significant accomplishment, especially considering the recent challenges faced by the team, which have been tough for many players.
“I’m eager for next week,” McCullum remarked. “It would be fantastic to have the chance to secure a series win against a strong New Zealand team. If we manage to do that, it would be a remarkable achievement, particularly after the difficulties of the past week.”
Stokes and Atkinson were not available for selection at The Oval after reportedly violating team curfew following England's win in the first Test, which was associated with an incident at a Chelsea nightclub involving an ECB security liaison.
Both players have since been permitted to play for their respective counties while investigations by the Cricket Regulator and the ECB are still ongoing, with no public findings released yet.
