Ben Stokes Apologizes to Teammates Ahead of Crucial Test Against New Zealand
Stokes Addresses Team Protocol Breach
In Nottingham, England's Test captain Ben Stokes has expressed his regret to his teammates for missing the second Test against New Zealand due to a violation of team protocols. He emphasized his eagerness for a positive outcome in the upcoming series decider set to begin on Thursday.
Stokes, along with pacer Gus Atkinson, was absent from The Oval Test following an alleged breach of curfew and an incident at a Chelsea nightclub after their victory in the first Test. He has now returned to lead the team as captain. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) conducted an investigation but only issued a formal warning without further consequences.
England suffered a 253-run defeat in the second Test, with Joe Root stepping in as captain during Stokes' absence. This situation arose after Ollie Robinson and Jamie Smith also missed the match due to injury and paternity leave, respectively. Consequently, three players made their Test debuts: James Rew, Sonny Baker, and Jordan Cox, all of whom have been dropped for the decisive match.
During a pre-match press conference, Stokes stated, as reported by ESPNCricinfo, "I did apologize. That was one of the first things I needed to do as captain. The situation impacts more than just me; it affects Joe, the squad, and others outside the playing environment. It undoubtedly influenced the debutants, who should have had their moment in the spotlight, but an external situation overshadowed their big day."
Stokes acknowledged that it would have been "foolish and naive" not to confront the issue, highlighting his leadership responsibilities. He remarked, "It's easy to take credit when things are going well, but you must also accept accountability. You need to be mature enough to face those affected and offer a sincere apology, which I did."
His expression of remorse is anticipated to quell discussions regarding the futures of Stokes, Brendon McCullum, and Rob Key, who recently avoided repercussions from an ECB review following a 1-4 defeat in the Ashes series. This incident has placed additional pressure on England during their first international series of the summer.
Stokes added, "Yesterday (Tuesday), my priority as captain was to reassure the team that I am fully back in my role. I needed to communicate a few things to the team, and I believe I conveyed those effectively."
He also mentioned that he has communicated his focus to his teammates, stating, "Everyone in the dressing room understands the responsibilities of those who received the call-up this week, and I am fully aware of my duties as captain in this crucial match."
While acknowledging that the previous match's outcome cannot be altered, Stokes expressed optimism for the series decider, saying, "We are eager for a win. I am determined to achieve that, and I believe I have made it clear to the team that this is my priority."
The England XI for the third Test includes: 1 Ben Duckett, 2 Emilio Gay, 3 Jacob Bethell, 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Jamie Smith (wk), 7 Ben Stokes (capt), 8 Gus Atkinson, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Josh Tongue, 11 Shoaib Bashir.
