England's Squad Changes for Second Test

On Wednesday, the England cricket board announced that captain Ben Stokes and player Gus Atkinson have been excluded from the 15-member squad for the upcoming second Test against New Zealand. This decision comes in light of an ongoing investigation related to their alleged involvement in a nightclub incident.

In Stokes' absence, senior batsman Joe Root has been appointed as the interim captain. The second Test is scheduled to take place at The Oval from June 17 to June 21.

The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the news, stating, "Due to the ongoing investigation, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson are unavailable for selection for the Rothesay second Test against New Zealand, commencing at the Kia Oval on Wednesday, June 17. Joe Root will lead the team as Interim Captain."

Additionally, Sussex fast bowler Jofra Archer and Essex batsman Jordan Cox have been included in the squad.

Reports indicate that Stokes was allegedly involved in a nightclub incident with teammate Gus Atkinson, which also reportedly involved a rugby player. This incident occurred on Sunday night, following England's victory over New Zealand by 115 runs in the first Test at Lord's.

According to reports, both Stokes and Atkinson were at the nightclub during the early hours of Monday morning when the incident occurred.

'TalkSport' mentioned on Tuesday that Stokes might consider stepping down from his captaincy role and could even announce his retirement.

The ECB had previously stated that they were looking into a breach of team protocols after the conclusion of the first Test against New Zealand.
