Belgium Parts Ways with Coach Rudi Garcia After World Cup Exit
Belgium Football Association Confirms Coaching Change
Brussels, Belgium - On July 20, the Belgian football association announced that it will not extend Rudi Garcia's contract as head coach.
Garcia led the Belgian team to the quarter-finals of the recent FIFA World Cup, where they faced elimination at the hands of Spain, the eventual champions. Despite this achievement, his tenure was marked by a series of disappointing performances, prompting the decision to end their collaboration.
The 62-year-old French coach's contract is set to expire at the end of this month.
Vincent Mannaert, the sports director of the association, stated, "Rudi Garcia has undeniably played a significant role in revitalizing the Belgian Red Devils." He acknowledged the challenging circumstances under which Garcia was appointed and praised his commitment and experience for restoring team unity and achieving a commendable result at the World Cup.
Mannaert expressed gratitude on behalf of the federation, thanking Garcia and his coaching staff for their contributions over the past 18 months. He mentioned that preparations are underway for a new cycle, which includes finding a successor for Garcia.
In the quarter-final match, Spain triumphed over Belgium, securing a semi-final spot against France. Goals from Fabian Ruiz and substitute Mikel Merino sealed a 2-1 victory, with Charles De Ketelaere scoring Belgium's only goal.
During the match, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had to leave the field due to injury, with Senne Lammens stepping in during the 71st minute. This substitution proved detrimental, as Lammens was unable to save a long-range shot from Pau Cubarsi, leading to Merino's goal from the rebound.
Garcia's departure adds him to a list of coaches who have left their positions during or after the World Cup, including those from Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ghana, Haiti, Jordan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Scotland, Senegal, Tunisia, and Uruguay.
