BCCI Set to Announce New T20 Captain for India Ahead of European Tour
Upcoming Leadership Changes in Indian T20 Cricket
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 3: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is gearing up for a crucial meeting of the Apex Committee on Thursday, where a new captain for the T20 International team is likely to be revealed, as per insider information.
Sources within the BCCI suggest that Suryakumar Yadav may be relieved of his captaincy, with Shreyas Iyer poised to step in as the new leader for the Indian squad in the T20 format.
Despite leading India to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, where they successfully defended their title and became the first team to win the trophy on home soil, Yadav's position is under scrutiny. He managed to score only 270 runs during the IPL 2026 season, contributing to the Mumbai Indians' disappointing ninth-place finish in the league.
India's upcoming European tour includes two T20 matches against Ireland and five against England, starting June 26.
Shreyas Iyer, who last represented India in a T20I against Australia in December 2023, is making a comeback following an impressive IPL 2026 season with Punjab Kings, where he amassed 498 runs.
Other potential candidates for the captaincy include explosive opener Ishan Kishan and middle-order batsman Tilak Varma. Additionally, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who topped the IPL 2026 scoring charts with 776 runs, is also in contention for a spot in the squad.
