BCCI Annual Meeting: Future of Selection Committee and Upcoming Celebrations Discussed
BCCI's Decision on Selection Committee Leadership
During the Annual General Meeting held on Friday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) empowered its office-bearers to decide whether to extend the contract of Ajit Agarkar, the current chairman of selectors, or to seek a new candidate.
Agarkar's contract is approaching its expiration on October 4, making his position a focal point of discussion as the BCCI considers its options.
A senior official from the BCCI stated, 'The office bearers have been given the authority to make decisions regarding the selection committees,' following the meeting.
AGM Attendance and Junior Selection Committee
The 95th AGM saw participation from various affiliated state member boards, including notable figures like former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and ex-pacer Venkatesh Prasad.
In addition to deliberating on the senior selection committee's leadership, the BCCI is also in the process of appointing members for all five positions on the junior selection committee.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia mentioned that a significant number of applications have been received for the junior selection committee, with plans to finalize selections within two weeks.
Fielding Coach Appointment and Performance Review
Saikia confirmed that Subhadeep Ghosh has been appointed as the Indian team's fielding coach on a temporary basis, with his performance under review.
'We will evaluate his effectiveness and, based on feedback from the team management, decide on his continued role,' Saikia explained.
Mumbai Cricket Association's Request
The Mumbai Cricket Association has urged the BCCI to consider it for hosting significant matches, as stated by secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar.
Wankhede Stadium has not hosted a Test match for nearly two years, with the last one occurring in late 2024 against New Zealand. However, it is set to welcome cricket back with upcoming events like the Women’s Champions League and parts of the Women’s Premier League.
Clarification on Test Match Location
Saurabh Tiwary, secretary of the Jharkhand State Cricket Association, expressed uncertainty regarding the potential relocation of the India-Australia Test from Ranchi, stating, 'This is news to me. I haven’t written anything or discussed it at the AGM.'
BCCI Centenary and IPL 20th Anniversary Plans
The BCCI announced plans for its centenary celebrations in 2028, which will kick off in December 2027 and continue throughout the year, marking a significant milestone in Indian cricket history.
Additionally, the General Body unanimously decided to celebrate the 20th edition of the IPL in 2027 with grandeur.
Other Key Decisions Made
The AGM also approved the annual budget for FY 2026-27 and appointed auditors for the current financial year.
Arun Dhumal and Khairul Jamal Majumdar were re-elected unopposed to the IPL Governing Council.
The General Body also sanctioned an improved payment structure for umpires and match referees, with new rates set to replace the existing ones.
Updates on Age Verification Policy
In response to recent age fraud incidents, the BCCI has revised its Age Verification Policy and established a new Internal Committee under its Prevention of Sexual Harassment Policy.
Saikia noted that the decision regarding associate membership for Cricket Andaman and Nicobar has been postponed due to legal considerations.
