Bangladesh Secures Series Leveling Win Against New Zealand in Second ODI
Bangladesh Triumphs in Second ODI
Dhaka [Bangladesh], April 20: Bangladesh made a strong comeback in the three-match ODI series, clinching a decisive six-wicket victory over New Zealand at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Monday. The standout performances came from pacer Nahid Rana, who achieved a remarkable five-wicket haul, alongside half-centuries from Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Najmul Hossain Shanto, which were pivotal in securing the win for the home side.
New Zealand, after winning the toss and opting to bat first, faced immediate challenges. The Bangladeshi pace attack, featuring Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, and Nahid Rana, put the New Zealand batsmen under significant pressure. Nahid Rana made his mark early, taking the first wicket of Henry Nicholls (13) in the 8th over.
He followed up swiftly by dismissing Will Young (2) in his next over, leaving New Zealand struggling at 28/2 within 9.1 overs. Rana continued to dominate, claiming the wicket of Muhammad Abbas (19) during the middle overs and later returning to take down Dean Foxcroft (15) and Jayden Lennox (0), finishing with impressive figures of 5 for 32.
Nick Kelly stood out for New Zealand, scoring a resilient 83 runs, but he lacked support as no other batsman managed to reach 20 runs.
In pursuit of a target of 199, Bangladesh's innings began on a shaky note with early losses of Saif Hassan (8) and Soumya Sarkar (8) to Nathan Smith and Will O’Rourke, respectively.
However, Tanzid Hasan Tamim quickly turned the tide, scoring 76 runs off 58 balls, featuring 10 fours and 4 sixes, which significantly shifted the momentum in favor of Bangladesh. He formed a crucial 120-run partnership with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who contributed a steady 50 runs off 71 balls.
Despite a brief collapse where both Tanzid and Litton Das (7) fell to Jayden Lennox (2/36 in 9 overs), the outcome was never in jeopardy. Mehidy Hasan Miraz (30) and Towhid Hridoy (8) ensured the team crossed the finish line in the 36th over.
This victory levels the series at 1-1, following New Zealand's earlier win in the first match. With the momentum now on their side, both teams will face off in the final ODI on Wednesday, with the series trophy at stake.
