Bangladesh Players Cleared to Join PSL 2026 Amid Security Concerns
PSL 2026 Set to Kick Off
The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 is scheduled to commence on March 26 (Thursday). However, the tournament has faced significant challenges. Due to the ongoing conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan, matches will be held without spectators at only two locations: Lahore and Karachi. Additionally, several players have opted out of the league to pursue contracts in the IPL, and there have been threats from an armed group targeting the event. In a related development, Aminul Haque, the state minister for youth and sports in Bangladesh, previously stated that Bangladeshi players would refrain from traveling to Pakistan if security issues continued. However, this stance has changed officially just a day later.
As reported by Cricbuzz, the Bangladeshi government has now authorized players to travel to Pakistan for the PSL 2026. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had indicated that their actions would depend on government directives. Following this decision, four players have already departed for Pakistan to participate in the league. A senior official from the Bangladeshi government stated, 'We consulted with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which then communicated with our High Commission in Islamabad. After receiving assurances, we granted permission for participation in the PSL.'
Six Bangladeshi players, including Mustafizur Rahman, Parvez Hossain Emon, Shoriful Islam, Nahid Rana, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, and Rishad Hossain, have been selected by various franchises for the PSL 2026.
Safety Assurances from Bangladesh High Commission
The Bangladesh High Commission in Pakistan has also communicated with the BCB, assuring the safety of players traveling to Pakistan for the PSL. 'Please be informed that both Pakistan and Afghanistan have declared a ceasefire ahead of Eid-ul Azha. It is anticipated that this ceasefire will hold for the time being. The PSL matches will take place in Lahore and Karachi, which are deemed safe. The Pakistan Cricket Control Board has announced that there will be no public gatherings at the stadiums. The relevant authorities in Pakistan are committed to ensuring the safety and security of the cricketers,' the letter stated. 'Under these circumstances, the Mission recommends that Bangladeshi cricketers can participate in the PSL matches,' it concluded.
