Formation of the Election Commission

Dhaka [Bangladesh], May 13: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially announced the creation of an Election Commission tasked with overseeing the Board of Directors Election scheduled for 2026.

This three-member commission will manage all election-related procedures in line with the BCB's established rules and regulations.

Ahsanul Karim, a Senior Advocate at the Bangladesh Supreme Court, has been appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner. Joining him on the panel are Md. Israil Hawlader, the Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, and A. B. M. Ehsanul Mamun, who serves as Deputy Secretary and Director of Planning & Development at the National Sports Council.

The BCB confirmed this development through an official statement released from Dhaka on Wednesday.

The Election Commission is set to handle the administrative and procedural elements of the upcoming election for the cricket board's governing body.

Investigation into T20 World Cup Withdrawal

Earlier this week, the Bangladesh government established a three-member committee to investigate the decision to withdraw from the T20 World Cup.

Mahbub Ul Alam, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, stated, “The Ministry has formed a committee to examine the reasons behind Bangladesh's non-participation in the recently concluded T20 World Cup held in India.”

Dr. AKM Oli Ullah, Additional Secretary of the Administration Wing at the Ministry, will lead the committee, which also includes Habibul Bashar Sumon, a former National Captain and Chief Selector of BCB, and Barrister Faisal Dastagir, a Supreme Court Lawyer and sports organizer.

According to media reports, the committee will investigate the rationale behind the decision to abstain from the tournament and assess whether any diplomatic or strategic missteps were involved. They have been instructed to submit a detailed report to the Ministry within 15 working days.

Prior to the tournament, the BCB had raised security concerns regarding matches in India and requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate Bangladesh's games to Sri Lanka. However, the ICC denied this request, citing a lack of credible threats to the Bangladesh team in India.

As a result, Scotland replaced Bangladesh in the 20-team tournament after the BCB opted out of the scheduled matches.

Following Aminul Haque's appointment as Bangladesh's Minister for Youth and Sports, the government pledged to conduct a formal inquiry into the unexpected withdrawal to ensure accountability.
