BCB Issues Apology Over Director's Comments

Dhaka [Bangladesh], January 15: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has publicly apologized for the controversial statements made by its director, M Nazmul Islam. The Board clarified that these remarks do not represent its official position and warned of potential disciplinary measures against any conduct that disrespects players or tarnishes the reputation of Bangladesh cricket.

This statement follows significant backlash from the cricket community, particularly from the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), which has demanded the resignation of M Nazmul Islam due to his comments aimed at senior players, including former captain Tamim Iqbal.

In a release, the BCB expressed regret for any remarks that could be seen as inappropriate or offensive, emphasizing that such comments do not align with the Board's values or the expected conduct from its members. The BCB reiterated that it does not endorse any statements made by directors unless they are communicated through official channels.

The Board also committed to taking necessary disciplinary actions against individuals whose comments or behavior disrespect players or harm the integrity of Bangladesh cricket.

Furthermore, the BCB reaffirmed its unwavering support for all cricketers who have represented the nation, stating that player welfare is a top priority. The Board is dedicated to maintaining professionalism and mutual respect within the sport.

Previously, M Nazmul Islam referred to Tamim Iqbal as an 'Indian agent' after Iqbal suggested dialogue to address tensions in cricketing relations between Bangladesh and India, particularly concerning the release of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for the Indian Premier League (IPL).

With uncertainty surrounding Bangladesh's participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup in India, Tamim Iqbal emphasized the need for the BCB to prioritize the country's cricketing interests. He made these comments during the trophy unveiling for the Zia Inter-University Cricket Tournament on January 9.

“As I am not part of the BCB, I learn about these matters through the media. However, I believe those in charge have more information. Therefore, I should refrain from making hasty comments. The interests of Bangladesh cricket must be the priority in any decision-making,” Tamim stated.

Currently, the BCB has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to consider relocating its T20 World Cup matches outside India due to safety and security concerns for players. This request follows the BCCI's directive for KKR to release Mustafizur amid rising tensions in Bangladesh.

Tamim also highlighted the importance of discussing sensitive issues internally before making public statements, as they can be challenging to retract. He reiterated that the future of Bangladesh cricket should take precedence, especially since a significant portion of funding comes from the ICC.

“I believe that sensitive matters should be discussed within the board before any public comments are made. Once a statement is made, it becomes difficult to retract. The future of Bangladesh cricket is paramount, and decisions should be made with the sport's best interests in mind,” he added.

The remarks from the BCB Director have sparked outrage among cricket fans, with several of Tamim's teammates, including Mominul Haque, Taskin Ahmed, and Taijul Islam, expressing their support for him on social media.
