Bangladesh Captain Finds Inspiration in World Test Championship Position Ahead of West Indies Series
Bangladesh's WTC Standing Sparks Motivation
New Delhi, October 27: Najmul Hossain Shanto, the captain of Bangladesh, has expressed that his team's current standing in the World Test Championship (WTC) is more of a motivational factor than a source of stress as they prepare for their home Test series against the West Indies, as reported by a sports media outlet.
Currently, Bangladesh ranks fourth in the WTC standings, with a slim chance of securing a top-two finish. To maintain their hopes of reaching the finals, they must win all four of their remaining home Tests.
The two-Test series against the West Indies will kick off on Wednesday, with the second match set to commence on November 5.
Prior to the first Test, Shanto emphasized that being in the top four of the WTC is a source of inspiration rather than pressure. He stated that the team aims to adhere to their established processes and build on their recent performances instead of overexerting themselves.
“For me, being in the top four is not pressure; it’s inspiring,” Shanto remarked. “I find it motivating that such situations are arising in Test cricket. Since we began our preparations for this series, our focus has been on our performance in recent Test matches and over the years,” he added.
“We don’t want to change our approach; we simply want to stick to our process. I’m not expecting any extraordinary efforts from anyone. While this series is crucial, our aim is to continue with the process that has brought us success,” he continued.
Bangladesh enters this Test series following a disappointing tour of the UAE, where they lost both matches in the ODI tri-series and drew a one-off Test against Afghanistan.
Despite a 2-0 home series victory over Pakistan, Bangladesh has struggled with consistency, suffering a defeat in a one-off Test against Zimbabwe, followed by a win against Australia in Darwin, and then losing the subsequent match. Earlier this month, they drew a Test against Afghanistan.
Shanto noted that the victory in Darwin has significantly boosted the players' confidence and their eagerness to improve in Test cricket, stating that excitement for the upcoming matches has increased within the squad.
“Winning the Darwin Test has naturally lifted the players’ confidence and belief. This was expected. Even before that, the players showed a strong desire to excel in this format. Their enthusiasm has only intensified since the win, and I’ve noticed a growing anticipation among the players for the next Test match,” he concluded.
