Bafana Bafana Makes History by Advancing to FIFA World Cup Knockout Stage
Historic Achievement for South Africa
In a remarkable feat, South Africa, affectionately known as Bafana Bafana, has made history by reaching the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 for the very first time. This milestone was achieved following a narrow 1-0 victory against South Korea in their final group match.
Celebrating this significant achievement, the South African government took to social media to express their pride, calling it a pivotal moment for the nation's football. Their post read, "HISTORY MADE! BAFANA BAFANA ARE THROUGH TO THE FIFA WORLD CUP ROUND OF 32! A memorable night for South African football as Bafana Bafana secure a place in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time. The team has shown courage, determination and belief, making the nation proud on the world stage. South Africa stands united in celebration. Congratulations, Bafana Bafana — the journey continues!"

The decisive goal came from winger Thapelo Maseko in the second half, marking him as the second youngest goalscorer for South Africa in World Cup history at just 22 years and 225 days.
Despite facing a crowd that largely supported South Korea, South Africa started strong. Maseko posed an early threat, nearly creating a scoring opportunity before being thwarted by defender Lee Gihyuk.
Throughout the first half, South Africa generated more chances, with Korean goalkeeper Kim Seunggyu making several crucial saves, including a long-range shot from Thalente Mbatha and a close-range attempt from Evidence Makgopa.
In an effort to change the game's momentum, South Korea's coach Hong Myungbo made three substitutions at halftime, including bringing in captain Son Heung-min.
However, as South Korea pressed for an equalizer, South Africa capitalized on a counterattack. Substitute Teshpang Moremi received the ball on the left, evaded his defender, and delivered a low pass to Maseko, who expertly controlled it and scored with a precise shot into the near corner.
In the final moments, South Korea sought to level the score but could not penetrate South Africa's defense, allowing Bafana Bafana to secure a historic win.
With this result, South Africa finished second in Group A, accumulating four points from three matches, with one win, one draw, and one loss. Mexico topped the group with a perfect nine points, while South Korea ended in third place with three points, and Czechia was eliminated with just one point.
Next, South Africa will head to Los Angeles to face the runners-up of Group B in the Round of 32 on June 28.
Mexico, the co-hosts, dominated Group A, winning all three matches and scoring six goals without conceding any.
