Babar Azam Returns as Pakistan's Test Captain Amid Squad Changes
Babar Azam Takes Over Test Captaincy
After a three-year hiatus from the role, Babar Azam has been reinstated as the Test captain of Pakistan, succeeding Shan Masood. This surprising decision was revealed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) during the announcement of the squads for upcoming tours to the West Indies and England. Aaqib Javed, the high-performance director for Pakistan, commented on Masood's removal, citing the team's inability to secure victories from advantageous positions as a key factor. He noted, "Under Shan's leadership, we witnessed several closely contested Test matches, but certain issues were overlooked. For instance, in the Centurion Test, South Africa's lower-order batsmen managed to form a significant partnership when the match was in our favor. Similarly, during the second Test against the West Indies in Multan, the team was easily defeated," Javed explained. He emphasized that the captain bears the responsibility for closing out games, as well as managing the team's over rate, making DRS decisions, and calling the toss correctly.
Masood's tenure as captain saw Pakistan achieve only four victories in twelve matches, while Babar Azam had led the team to ten wins in twenty matches prior to his resignation, with four matches ending in draws. Although the series against the West Indies may not pose a significant challenge, the upcoming tour of England is expected to be a much tougher test for the team.
Schedule for Pakistan's Tour of West Indies and England
Pakistan is set to visit the West Indies for two Test matches, with the first match scheduled from July 25 to 30 at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. The second Test will take place at Trinidad's Queen's Park Oval from August 2 to 7. Following the West Indies series, Pakistan will head to England for three Tests, starting with the first Test at Headingley from August 19 to 23. The second Test will be held at Lord's Cricket Ground from August 27 to 31, and the final Test is planned for Edgbaston.
Pakistan's squad for the England and West Indies series includes: Babar Azam (c), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Fazal, Ali Usman, Azan Awais, Imam ul Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Awais Zafar, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori (wk), Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Shan Masood, and Ubaid Shah.
