Port of Spain, Aug 6: Pakistan's captain Babar Azam expressed his happiness after guiding his team to a convincing eight-wicket win against the West Indies in Trinidad. This victory marked the end of a three-year drought for away Test wins and propelled Pakistan to the eighth spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings.
On the fourth day of the second Test, Pakistan chased down a target of 75 runs, with Babar sealing the win by hitting spinner Jomel Warrican for consecutive sixes, thus leveling the two-match series at 1-1 at Queen’s Park Oval.
This win is significant as it is Pakistan's first Test victory on foreign soil since July 2023. The points gained from this match allowed them to surpass the West Indies in the WTC standings ahead of their upcoming series against England.
Abdullah Shafique's outstanding unbeaten century in the first innings laid the foundation for the victory, complemented by Babar's solid batting performance. The decision by the management to include an extra spinner instead of senior fast bowler Mohammad Abbas proved crucial, with Ali Usman and Sajid Khan each taking four wickets in the West Indies' second innings.
"The pitch resembled those in Pakistan, which influenced our decision to play an additional spinner, impacting our team composition and leading to the exclusion of some senior players. Winning is satisfying, but executing our plans effectively was paramount. Abdullah's performance in the first innings and the spinners' effectiveness in the second innings were key factors," Babar stated, as reported by ICC after the series.
Player of the Match Shafique, who was a late addition to the squad due to an injury to Abdullah Fazal, shared his excitement about making the most of this opportunity. "This felt like a debut match for me, and it was quite unexpected. I haven't had many chances lately, but as a professional, you must strive for a comeback and give your best," he remarked.
Pakistan's next challenge will be a three-match Test series in England, commencing at Headingley on August 19, followed by matches at Lord’s (August 27-31) and Edgbaston (September 9-13).
