Ayush Shetty Shines at Badminton Asia Championships, Eyes Thomas Cup Glory
Ayush Shetty's Remarkable Journey at the Badminton Asia Championships
Ningbo, China - April 14: Indian badminton prodigy Ayush Shetty recently clinched a silver medal at the Badminton Asia Championships, showcasing impressive performances throughout the tournament. The 20-year-old expressed his pride in representing India and receiving accolades from renowned two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, as he prepares for his debut in the Thomas Cup this year.
Although Shetty faced defeat against world number two Shi Yu Qi in the final, he made history by becoming only the second Indian to reach the men's singles final, following Dinesh Khanna's achievement in 1965.
During the tournament, the Karnataka native faced significant challenges, proving his potential with each match. His first major test came against world number seven Li Shi Feng, whom he defeated in straight games, 21-13, 21-16. Shetty then advanced to the semifinals, where he outperformed Olympian Jonatan Christie, ranked fourth in the world, with a score of 23-21, 21-17, demonstrating remarkable composure under pressure.
The semifinals featured a stunning upset as Shetty triumphed over world number one Kunlavut Vitidsarn, the silver medalist from the 2024 Paris Olympics. After losing the first game, Shetty rallied to secure a 21-19, 21-17 victory, a moment he will cherish alongside his silver medal. This performance highlights India's growing badminton prowess, especially following PV Sindhu's World Championship win in 2019 and the historic Thomas Cup victory in 2022.
Reflecting on his achievement, Ayush stated, "Winning a medal for your country is always a special feeling. I'm proud of my performance throughout the tournament, even though I aimed for gold. It was a great run."
In the final, Shetty acknowledged that he couldn't showcase his usual dominance against Shi Yu, who played strategically. "He didn't allow me to control the net, which had been my strength in previous matches. His shot placement was impeccable, limiting my opportunities for smashes," he explained.
Regardless of the outcome, the young athlete relishes the chance to compete against the best in badminton and aims to prove his worth among them as he embarks on his professional journey.
"I enjoy playing against the world's top players. It's a significant challenge and an opportunity to demonstrate that I can compete with them," he remarked.
Ayush's passion for badminton ignited at the age of eight, inspired by watching his father play. "From a young age, I knew I wanted to represent my country at the highest level and win prestigious medals," he shared.
His impressive performance caught the attention of PV Sindhu, who labeled him a "generational talent" after his final appearance. She highlighted his height and powerful smashes as advantages. Ayush expressed gratitude for Sindhu's recognition, stating, "It was special to hear that. Speaking with her has been a valuable learning experience."
He has also trained alongside some of the best, including Olympic semifinalist Lakshya Sen and two-time Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen. Ayush praised Lakshya's mental strength and noted the insights he gained from training with Viktor in Dubai.
Looking ahead, Ayush has been selected for India's squad in the upcoming Thomas and Uber Cup, where he aims to contribute to India's quest for a second Thomas Cup title, four years after their historic win against Indonesia in 2022. He expressed excitement about teaming up with players like Lakshya, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, and Kidambi Srikanth, who were part of the victorious team.
"I'm thrilled to play alongside those who won the trophy. Our team is strong and confident, and we will strive to bring the trophy home," he concluded.
