Axar Patel Questions Impact Player Rule Ahead of IPL 2026

Axar Patel Critiques Impact Player Rule

Axar Patel, the captain of Delhi Capitals, has voiced his concerns regarding the Impact Player rule as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season approaches. During a pre-season press conference, he expressed that this rule diminishes the significance of all-rounders in the game. With the Delhi Capitals set to kick off their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1, the focus has shifted from international cricket to the franchise league, especially with Axar returning after India's recent global achievements.

Despite the excitement surrounding the IPL, Axar made it clear that he is not a fan of every aspect of the league's evolving format. He stated, “I don’t like this rule. Teams now opt for a specialist batter or bowler, which impacts the role of all-rounders. However, rules are rules.” The Impact Player rule, which was introduced in 2023, permits teams to substitute a player from a designated list at any point during the match. While it has introduced a new tactical element, many players have raised concerns about its long-term effects on team dynamics.

Axar is not alone in his criticism; Rohit Sharma has previously mentioned that this rule hinders the growth of all-rounders in Indian cricket, while Hardik Pandya pointed out the challenges it creates for teams in selecting players who excel in both batting and bowling.

As he leads the Delhi Capitals for the second consecutive year, Axar acknowledges the need for a mental reset after a taxing international season. He shared, “After giving so much mentally, there’s a bit of emptiness. I just wanted to spend time with friends and family.” Having been part of the Capitals for seven seasons, he highlighted the importance of adaptability in franchise cricket, stating, “Franchise cricket is very different. Players come from various countries and roles. We must quickly adjust to different conditions and situations.”

The Delhi Capitals are eager to improve upon last season's performance, where they started strong but ultimately missed out on a playoff spot. With Axar's leadership and his composed experience from the World Cup, the franchise aims to secure its first IPL title this season.
