Axar Patel Critiques Impact Player Rule's Effect on All-Rounders in IPL
Axar Patel Voices Concerns Over Impact Player Rule
In a recent statement, Axar Patel, the captain of Delhi Capitals and vice-captain of the Indian national team, expressed his reservations about the Impact Player rule, suggesting it may disadvantage all-rounders during team selection.
Introduced in the IPL 2023, the Impact Player rule permits teams to substitute one player from a pool of four designated substitutes during a match. This change aims to enhance tactical options, allowing teams to replace a batsman, bowler, or all-rounder depending on the game's dynamics.
Despite its intention to boost strategy and excitement, many all-rounders, including Patel, feel that this rule diminishes their significance on the team. He stated, "I’m not a fan of this rule, as it affects all-rounders like me. Previously, teams valued all-rounders for both batting and bowling. Now, I believe management tends to favor specific batsmen or bowlers, questioning the need for all-rounders. Personally, I dislike this rule, but we must adhere to it. However, I still find it unfavorable."
As IPL teams finalize their rosters and strategies for the upcoming season, the Delhi Capitals, who have yet to secure an IPL championship, ended last season in fifth place, narrowly missing the playoffs.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the schedule for the initial phase of IPL 2026, with Delhi Capitals set to kick off their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1. Their subsequent matches include a face-off against Mumbai Indians on April 4, followed by encounters with Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings on April 8 and April 11, respectively.
The Delhi Capitals squad for IPL 2026 includes: Nitish Rana, Abishek Porel, Ajay Mandal, Ashutosh Sharma, Axar Patel, Dushmantha Chameera, Karun Nair, KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, Madhav Tiwari, Mitchell Starc, Sameer Rizvi, T Natarajan, Tripurana Vijay, Tristan Stubbs, Vipraj Nigam, David Miller, Ben Duckett, Auqib Nabi, Pathum Nissanka, Lungi Ngidi, Sahil Parakh, Prithvi Shaw, and Kyle Jamieson.
