Australia's Socceroos Exit FIFA World Cup 2026 After Penalty Heartbreak
Socceroos' World Cup Journey Comes to an End
On July 4, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his admiration for the Socceroos following their emotional exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026. The team faced a tough defeat against Egypt in the Round of 32, losing 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.
Australia's aspirations to advance to the last 16 were thwarted as Egypt progressed to the knockout stage for the first time in their history. The match took place in Dallas, where the Socceroos initially showed promise, nearly scoring within the first five minutes when Cristian Volpato's long-range shot hit the crossbar.
Despite their strong start, Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute with a header from Emam Ashour, following a well-placed cross from Karim Hafez. The Socceroos equalized shortly after halftime when Mohamed Hany inadvertently redirected an Australian free-kick into his own goal, setting the stage for a tense finish.
Goalkeeper Patrick Beach played a crucial role in keeping Australia in the match, making a spectacular one-handed save against Rabia's header, while Harry Souttar blocked a shot from Haisem Hassan as the game moved into extra time.
With neither team able to score in the additional 30 minutes, veteran Mathew Ryan was brought in for the penalty shootout. However, Australia struggled from the spot, with Souttar missing the opening penalty and Lucas Herrington failing to convert the fourth. Hossam Abdelmaguid sealed the victory for Egypt with the final penalty, concluding Australia's World Cup campaign.
