Australia's Squad Changes for Upcoming Series

Melbourne [Australia], May 11: Australia will be without their pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins for the upcoming white-ball series against Pakistan and Bangladesh, which kicks off on May 30. In their absence, a promising talent from the recent U19 World Cup has been called up.

Oliver Peake, who captained Australia in this year's U19 World Cup, along with uncapped all-rounder Liam Scott, has been included in the squad for the ODIs against Pakistan. Additionally, pacer Billy Stanlake makes a return to the national side after a seven-year hiatus, as reported by the ICC.

During the U19 World Cup, Peake amassed 234 runs in four innings, featuring two centuries against the West Indies and England in the semifinal. Meanwhile, Scott has had an impressive Sheffield Shield season with South Australia, taking 28 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 23.25, alongside scoring 547 runs at an average of 39.07, which includes a century and two fifties.

Joel Davies has also been selected for the T20Is against Bangladesh in June, as Australia aims to recover from a disappointing performance at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year. The pace attack will include Riley Meredith and Stanlake, joining Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, and Liam Scott for the Pakistan tour.

Selection Chair George Bailey expressed optimism about the opportunities for emerging players in the absence of key figures. He stated, “It is always exciting to see new players get an opportunity to play international cricket and be a part of the national team,” as quoted by the ICC.

Bailey emphasized the importance of blending experienced players with newcomers, which he believes will create a balanced team for the sub-continent tours. He added, “Continuing to provide opportunities for players to develop across a broad range of conditions and experiences is important and will continue to be a focus over the next 18 months to two years.”

Mitchell Marsh will lead the Australian side in all white-ball matches against Pakistan and Bangladesh as they prepare for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup next year. Notably, veteran all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has not been included in the T20I squad, allowing Davies to make his international debut.

Starc, Cummins, and Hazlewood are expected to utilize this time to gear up for a busy schedule in Australia’s ICC World Test Championship campaign, which resumes in August.
