Australia's New Captain Set for T20 World Cup Despite Injury Concerns
Australia's Captain on Track for T20 World Cup
Melbourne [Australia], April 8: Shawn Flegler, who oversees Women's Cricket Performance and serves as National Selector for Cricket Australia, has confirmed that the newly appointed all-format captain is expected to recover in time for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled for June.
Earlier this year, Molineux was named captain with a focus on significant upcoming tournaments, particularly the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 and the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy the following year.
However, Molineux has faced challenges with injuries, including a stress reaction in her back during the recent tour of Australia against India, which limited her involvement in the subsequent West Indies tour, where she participated primarily as a batter.
Flegler discussed the management of Molineux's injury during the West Indies series, stating, “The stress reaction from the Indian series was unfortunate, but we had to make decisions. We could either risk pushing her or take a step back.”
Australia opted for a conservative approach to Molineux's treatment, ensuring she remained with the team while not exacerbating her condition.
“We chose to pull back, but it was crucial for her to be part of the group in the West Indies. She is on track for the T20 World Cup, which was our initial goal. It’s fair to say this situation is unprecedented,” Flegler added.
He expressed confidence in Molineux as Australia’s best option for the T20 World Cup, citing her extensive experience and leadership qualities. “We believe she was the best candidate for various reasons, including her success on the field and her connection with the team,” he remarked.
Flegler emphasized that Molineux's role would be as a bowling all-rounder, stating, “We are not considering her solely as a batting captain. She must be able to bowl during the tournament to be selected.”
