Australia's Coach Tony Popovic Prepares Socceroos for Crucial World Cup Clash Against Egypt
Australia's Readiness for the Knockout Stage
In Texas, USA, on July 3, Australia’s head coach Tony Popovic expressed confidence that the Socceroos are prepared to make a significant impact in their upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match against Egypt, scheduled for Friday in Arlington. He emphasized the importance of this knockout game.
Having successfully advanced past the group stage for the second consecutive World Cup, Australia faced a tough lineup that included the United States, Turkey, and Paraguay. They secured a 2-0 victory over Turkey, suffered a 2-0 loss to the USA, and ended with a goalless draw against Paraguay.
Popovic highlighted the importance of the match against Egypt, urging his players to concentrate on the task at hand. He noted that history will only be made if they perform well over the full duration of the match, including any extra time or penalties.
"We recognize the magnitude of this game, and I believe all players are ready to step up. We must remain focused on the moment. History is created after the match, so we need to do our part during the game, whether it lasts 90 minutes, goes into extra time, or requires penalties," he stated.
He anticipates a more challenging encounter against Egypt due to the knockout format but is optimistic that Australia can elevate their performance beyond what they displayed in the group stage.
"I expect this match to be tougher than our previous ones because it’s a knockout game, and we respect Egypt. However, I also believe we can improve our play, and tomorrow presents that opportunity," Popovic remarked.
Australia's last two knockout stage appearances ended in defeats against the eventual champions—Italy in 2006 and Argentina in the 2022 Qatar tournament.
Popovic acknowledged the promising future of Australian football, with many young talents on the horizon, but emphasized that the current squad is focused on achieving success in the present. He believes they have the capability to do so.
"We are optimistic about the future, and many young players not present now will be part of it. However, we are committed to delivering results with this group right now. We believe they are capable of achieving success at this moment," he added.
He reiterated that Australia has already demonstrated their quality by advancing from a challenging group and encouraged his players to maintain their focus on the present, expressing confidence in their ability to perform well against Egypt.
"We’ve already shown our quality by progressing through a very tough group. Tomorrow is another chance to focus on the present, and I am confident these players will deliver another strong performance," he concluded.
