Historic BBL Season Kickoff in Chennai

Melbourne [Australia], July 10: The 2026-27 season of Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) is set to commence in India, with the inaugural match scheduled to take place at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium in December, as announced by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday.


This announcement was made during Albanese's three-day visit to Australia, alongside India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi.


Cricket Australia confirmed that the opening match will feature the Melbourne Renegades facing off against the Perth Scorchers in Chennai. This event will mark a significant milestone as it will be the first BBL game held outside of Australia, officially starting the BBL 16 season on December 12.


For this landmark match, the Melbourne Renegades will be recognized as the home team at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.


During the visit, PM Albanese and PM Modi also introduced the Roadmap on Sport Cooperation, which aims to enhance the sporting relationship between Australia and India, according to a media release.


This initiative seeks to leverage Australia's experience in hosting major sporting events alongside India's aspirations in the sports sector, while also creating new opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment. It highlights key collaboration areas such as capacity building, sports science, and technology research.


The Roadmap is anticipated to strengthen cooperation in organizing significant international sporting events, with Australia preparing for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and India gearing up for the historic centenary edition of the 2030 Commonwealth Games.


Albanese emphasized the shared passion for sports between Australia and India, stating that the new Sports Roadmap will enhance bilateral relations through collaboration in capability building, technology, and research, while also promoting trade, tourism, and investment between the two nations.


“Australia and India are united by our love and passion for sport. This sports roadmap will focus on practical priority areas such as capability building, technology, and research to strengthen this cornerstone of our bilateral relationship. I am excited to expand cooperation with India on sport, which not only brings joy to Australians but boosts trade, tourism, and investment,” he remarked.
