Australia Women Triumph Over India in T20 World Cup Showdown
Australia Women Secure Semi-Final Spot by Defeating India
In a decisive match at Lord's on Sunday, Australia Women emerged victorious against India Women, winning by six wickets and eliminating the Women in Blue from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Entering the game with their semi-final hopes on the line, India needed a win to advance.
Australia and South Africa Women were leading Group A after the latter's earlier victory over Bangladesh.
This defeat marks India's exit from the tournament, following a previous loss to South Africa. Meanwhile, Australia progressed to the semi-finals without a single defeat, showcasing their dominance in ICC events.
This match also recorded the highest successful run chase in Women’s T20 World Cup history.
Chasing a target of 171, Australia displayed their characteristic poise and batting strength. Despite India taking wickets at regular intervals, the Australian batters maintained control over the required run rate. Their top and middle order effectively combined smart strike rotation with timely boundaries.
The defending champions successfully chased down the target in the 19th over, finishing at 172/4 with six balls remaining.
Renuka Singh Thakur gave India an early breakthrough, trapping Georgia Voll lbw in the first over.
However, Australia quickly took charge, ending the powerplay at 49/1, slightly ahead of India’s 43/0.
Deepti Sharma claimed the crucial wicket of Beth Mooney, becoming the highest wicket-taker in women’s international cricket with 356 wickets.
India managed to restrict Australia to 72/3 at the halfway mark. A significant 100-run partnership between Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner revitalized the Australian innings after they were at 68/3.
Both Perry and Gardner scored half-centuries, bringing Australia close to the target at 166/3 in 18 overs.
Despite a star-studded crowd at Lord's supporting India, they fell short in this critical knockout match.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur led the charge for India with a powerful half-century, while openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma set a solid foundation, helping India post a competitive score of 170/4.
After winning the toss, Harmanpreet opted to bat first on a pitch favorable for batting, knowing a win was essential for their semi-final aspirations. The openers, Smriti Mandhana (38) and Shafali Verma (34), capitalized on the Powerplay with aggressive batting and quick running, reaching 43/0 after six overs.
Shafali showcased her form with a six off Ash Gardner, while Mandhana supported her well. Although Australia broke the opening partnership in the ninth over, India had already established a strong position at 74/1 after 10 overs. However, Mandhana was run out in the 12th over.
Skipper Harmanpreet joined Jemimah Rodrigues, and together they stabilized the innings, gradually increasing the scoring rate. They effectively rotated the strike and capitalized on loose deliveries, ensuring India did not lose wickets in clusters against a disciplined Australian bowling attack.
Their partnership combined caution with aggression, frustrating the Australian bowlers while maintaining a scoring rate of over seven runs per over. They guided India to 147 for 2 in 19 overs.
Notably, Rodrigues, who was batting at 34 off 28 balls, had to retire hurt.
India finished strongly in the last over, with Harmanpreet hitting three consecutive sixes before being dismissed on the penultimate ball of the innings. She scored 56 runs off just 27 balls, including six fours and three sixes.
New batter Deepti Sharma hit a four on her only ball faced, as India scored 23 runs in the final over, concluding their innings at 170/4.
