Australia Takes Narrow Lead Over South Africa in Thrilling Test Match
Day 2 Highlights: Australia vs South Africa Test Match
In Cape Town, on October 28, Australia concluded Day 2 of the third Test against South Africa with a narrow lead of one run, reaching 330/4 in their first innings. This was largely thanks to an impressive unbroken partnership of 145 runs between Josh Inglis and Alex Carey.
Inglis ended the day unbeaten on 85 from 111 balls, while Carey contributed a solid 51 not out off 126 deliveries. Their partnership proved crucial in surpassing South Africa's first-innings total of 329, leaving Australia in a strong position with six wickets remaining as they head into Day 3.
The Australian innings began with openers Travis Head and Matt Renshaw forming a solid 58-run partnership. Head scored a quick 41 before off-spinner Simon Harmer made a significant impact, dismissing him and Marnus Labuschagne in quick succession, shifting the momentum towards South Africa.
At lunch, Australia was at 90/2, with Cameron Green and Renshaw stabilizing the innings after the early setbacks. Following the break, Renshaw and Green combined for a 126-run partnership for the third wicket, both scoring half-centuries to help Australia recover.
Renshaw was eventually dismissed for 74 by Marco Jansen, who also took Green's wicket for 65 shortly after, leaving Australia at 185/4. Despite South Africa's resurgence, Inglis and Carey’s partnership in the final session turned the tide back in favor of Australia.
Inglis effectively utilized his footwork and reverse-sweep against Harmer, while Carey provided stability at the other end. Their partnership brought Australia to 330/4 at stumps, giving them a slight edge.
For South Africa, Jansen took two wickets for 37 runs, and Harmer finished with figures of two for 84. Earlier, South Africa was bowled out for 329 in 82.3 overs, with Marques Ackerman top-scoring with 95 and Aiden Markram adding 78.
