Australia Announces Squad for Crucial Second Test Against Bangladesh
Australia's Lineup for the Second Test
In Mackay, Australia has officially revealed their playing eleven for the upcoming second Test match against Bangladesh, scheduled to commence on Saturday. Matthew Renshaw steps in for Jake Weatherald, while Nathan Lyon remains in the squad as Australia aims to equalize the two-match series after their surprising defeat in the Darwin Test.
Despite earlier suggestions from captain Pat Cummins about potentially fielding a four-man pace attack that could have seen Scott Boland take Lyon's spot, the veteran spinner has kept his place in the team. Cummins confirmed Lyon's selection after inspecting the pitch, with Boland and reserve wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis once again left out.
Renshaw is set to open the batting alongside Travis Head in this second contest of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27, taking the place of fellow left-handed batsman Jake Weatherald, who was dropped after scoring 23 and 0 in the previous match.
This will mark Renshaw's first Test appearance in over three years, and Cummins has expressed confidence in the 30-year-old's ability to perform well upon his return. The Australian captain emphasized Renshaw's growth as a batsman and the need for consistency, sharpness, and the ability to apply pressure on opposing bowlers.
Cummins stated, "We just want his best. Some discussions about Renners (Renshaw) in the past have noted his inconsistency. However, as a batter approaches the latter part of their career, it's crucial to understand what their best looks like, and I believe he has achieved that. Our hope is that Renners continues to deliver his best version every day, staying sharp and putting pressure back on the bowlers."
In the first match of the series, Bangladesh achieved a historic milestone by securing their inaugural Test victory in Australia, winning by nine wickets and taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. After Bangladesh scored 426 in their first innings, Australia was dismissed for 198 and 284, setting a modest target of 57 runs, which Bangladesh chased down comfortably.
Australia's playing eleven for the second Test includes: Matthew Renshaw, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Beau Webster, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, and Josh Hazlewood.
