As the Indian Premier League 2026 kicks off, Auqib Nabi, a promising fast bowler for Delhi Capitals, is on the cusp of a major career achievement. The right-arm pacer, who gained recognition for his impressive Ranji Trophy season, was signed by DC for a substantial Rs 8.6 crore. Nabi attributes his success to two influential figures in Indian cricket: Irfan Pathan and Parvez Rasool.
Originating from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir, Nabi's path to professional cricket was far from typical. With limited resources during his formative years, he developed his skills by playing with tennis balls on the streets and small school fields. His unwavering passion for cricket, despite familial opposition, set him apart. “I was inspired by Dale Steyn's ability to swing the ball at high speeds, which motivated me to pursue fast bowling and dream of representing India,” Nabi shared in a conversation with JioStar. He faced criticism from his father, who wished for him to become a doctor instead.
The breakthrough for Nabi came when Parvez Rasool became the first international cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir, making his achievements feel attainable. “Seeing Parvez Rasool debut for India after excelling in the IPL motivated me immensely. He is from a local village, just like me,” Nabi reflected. He recounted how he once attended trials without proper equipment, borrowing spikes from a senior player, marking the start of his competitive cricket journey.
A pivotal moment in Nabi's career occurred when former Indian pacer Irfan Pathan joined the Jammu and Kashmir team as a mentor. Nabi, then part of the Under-23 squad, caught Pathan's attention with his performances. “Irfan bhai's mentorship was crucial; he guided me to my debut for the senior team and provided invaluable tips. His experience as a legend of Team India was a great asset for me,” Nabi expressed.
Pathan also recalled his first encounter with Nabi, stating, “I first saw Auqib in 2018, and he was quite impressive. His ability to bowl long spells and late movement of the ball were remarkable.” With the Delhi Capitals gearing up to face the Mumbai Indians on April 4, Nabi is set to make his IPL debut, potentially marking a significant milestone in his journey characterized by determination, guidance, and self-belief.
