Assam's Cricket Future Brightened by Chief Minister's Support
A New Era for Cricket in Assam
GCCC, which operated from Nehru Stadium for decades, has produced some of the finest cricketers and administrators from the State.
The cricket community in Assam expresses deep gratitude towards Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for his steadfast commitment to enhancing cricket infrastructure within the state. His recent initiative to establish a dedicated ground for the Guwahati Cricket Coaching Centre (GCCC) and the City Cricket Coaching Centre (CCCC), which will be developed scientifically by the Assam Cricket Association (ACA), marks a significant advancement that will benefit future generations of cricketers.
Recently, I had the honor of meeting with the Chief Minister alongside BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, our head coach and secretary Nabab Ali, and other cricket stakeholders. During our discussion, we addressed the pressing challenges faced by these two esteemed cricket coaching institutions and the urgent need for adequate infrastructure to continue fostering young talent.
The Chief Minister's encouraging response and dedication to finding a sustainable solution have instilled renewed hope among aspiring cricketers and their families. His support reflects not only a commitment to sports development but also an understanding of the crucial role grassroots institutions play in shaping the future of cricket in Assam.
The importance of this initiative is underscored by the historical significance of these coaching centers. For over forty years, GCCC and CCCC have served as the foundation of cricket coaching in Guwahati and Assam. Thousands of young athletes have benefited from their training programs, with many advancing to represent Assam and even the national team.
GCCC, which has been based at Nehru Stadium for decades, has produced some of the state's most distinguished cricketers and administrators, including the Chief Minister himself, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, India international Riyan Parag, and numerous Ranji Trophy players who have proudly represented Assam on the national stage. Similarly, CCCC has played a vital role in discovering and nurturing cricketing talent, significantly contributing to the sport's growth in the region.
However, both institutions have encountered significant challenges in recent years. With Nehru Stadium undergoing redevelopment into a FIFA-standard football facility, GCCC lost its traditional training venue. CCCC, which had been operating at the Dispur Parade Ground, also faced obstacles due to ongoing construction and development work. Consequently, many trainees found themselves uncertain about their cricketing future.
In this context, the Chief Minister's intervention is crucial. The planned establishment of a modern cricket facility under the supervision of the Assam Cricket Association will create a stable and professionally managed environment for coaching and player development. More importantly, it will ensure the continuity of the rich legacy established by GCCC and CCCC over the past four decades.
Additionally, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia's well-thought-out vision and profound understanding of cricket administration have greatly contributed to the sport's advancement in Assam. His initiatives and commitment to developing sustainable infrastructure have been pivotal in propelling this project forward.
This collaborative effort involving the government, the Assam Cricket Association, and the cricket community will undoubtedly fortify Assam's cricketing ecosystem and open doors for countless young talents. The positive impact of this initiative will resonate not only today but for many years ahead, as future generations of cricketers chase their dreams with the backing of top-notch facilities and dedicated coaching.
