The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has announced that athletes who earn medals at the 2026 Asian Games will automatically qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. They will also gain direct access to the 2027 World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan, which is the first qualifying event for the upcoming Olympic Games.
This comprehensive selection policy aims to maximize the number of Indian boxers qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. It outlines a four-stage qualification process based on the guidelines set by World Boxing and sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
As per the established criteria, the 2027 World Boxing Championships will kick off the qualification events, followed by the Asian Qualifier in China and two additional World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028.
The BFI has reiterated its selection criteria for 2027-28, building on the guidelines released on December 8, 2025, to ensure transparency and fairness in the selection process.
According to the BFI's announcement, medallists from the 2026 Asian Games will be prioritized for selection in their respective weight classes, while gold medallists from the 10th Elite National Championships will act as reserve entries.
In weight categories where India does not secure a medal at the Asian Games, the gold medallist from the 10th Elite National Championships will be the primary entry for the LA 2028 Olympic weight classes.
Boxers who reach the quota bout round but do not secure a quota place at the World Championships will be granted direct entry into the Asian Qualifiers. Remaining slots will be filled through a Ranking Selection Trial among Elite National Camp participants.
A similar selection process will be implemented for the two World Qualifying Tournaments scheduled in 2028 in Italy and Hungary.
BFI President Ajay Singh emphasized that this policy is designed to provide boxers with a clear and structured pathway to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, focusing on consistent performance at the National Coaching Camp and World Boxing qualification events.
The National Coaching Camp will commence with medallists from the 10th Elite National Championships, Asian Games medallists, and any wild cards selected by the BFI Selection Committee, as outlined in the policy.
For non-Olympic weight categories, the gold medallist from the 10th Elite National Championships will be the main entry for the 2027 World Championships, with the silver medallist serving as the reserve.
