Mumbai Indians' Historic Victory

Ashwani Kumar made headlines by playing a pivotal role in the Mumbai Indians' (MI) impressive 99-run victory over the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on April 20. This win marked the end of a four-match losing streak for MI. The 24-year-old bowler set a new franchise record by achieving a four-wicket haul, surpassing the previous record held by Jasprit Bumrah for six years. In a crucial moment, Ashwani dismissed GT captain and current orange cap holder Shubman Gill for just 14 runs off 13 balls. He later took down Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan, and Rashid Khan, contributing significantly to MI's triumph. Earlier, Tilak Varma's century had propelled MI to a formidable total of 199.

Ashwani Kumar's Record-Breaking Performance

Ashwani concluded his spell with remarkable figures of 4/24 in his first appearance of the season, matching the numbers he achieved during his debut against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Wankhede Stadium last year. With this performance, he has become the youngest player in MI history to record two four-wicket hauls, breaking Bumrah's long-standing record from the 2020 season. Previously, this achievement belonged to Lasith Malinga.

Additionally, Ashwani is now the second-youngest uncapped player in IPL history to achieve two four-wicket hauls, a record currently held by Umran Malik, who accomplished this feat while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) shortly before his debut for India. Umran recorded a four-wicket haul against Punjab Kings (PBKS) and followed it up with a five-wicket haul against Gujarat Titans (GT) at Wankhede Stadium, achieving this at the age of 22 years and 156 days. Hailing from Punjab, Ashwani was acquired by MI for ₹30 Lakhs during the 2025 IPL Mega Auction. He made an impressive debut, taking the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane with his very first delivery, becoming only the 10th player in IPL history to achieve this milestone. His debut figures remain the best for an Indian player in their first IPL match, a record that was later matched by SRH's Sakib Hussain with identical figures of 4/24 against Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 season.
