Arshdeep Singh Sets New Record in T20 World Cup

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], February 26: Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has made history by surpassing Jasprit Bumrah to become the highest wicket-taker for India in ICC T20 World Cup history. This remarkable achievement occurred during a crucial match against Zimbabwe, where Arshdeep claimed 3 wickets for 24 runs in four overs.


Since his debut in the 2022 T20 World Cup, Arshdeep has taken a total of 35 wickets in 19 matches, boasting an impressive average of 14.25 and an economy rate of 7.33, including one four-wicket haul. Previously, Bumrah held the record with 33 wickets in 23 matches, averaging 14.00 and achieving best figures of 3/7.


In the tournament's history, Bangladesh's Shakib al Hasan leads with 50 wickets overall.


Throughout the current tournament, Arshdeep has secured eight wickets across five matches, averaging 16.00, with his best performance being 3/24. In the last edition in 2024, he was a joint-highest wicket-taker, claiming 17 wickets in eight matches at an average of 12.64, including a four-wicket haul with best figures of 4/9.


Arshdeep has also reached a milestone of 150 wickets in international cricket, with a total of 151 wickets in 96 matches and 94 innings, averaging 19.78. His record includes three four-wicket hauls and two five-wicket hauls, with best figures of 5/37. He stands as India's leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals with 126 wickets in 81 matches, alongside 25 ODI wickets in 15 matches.


Following this victory, India now has one win and one loss in the Super Eight phase, similar to West Indies. The upcoming match on March 1 between the two teams will serve as a virtual knockout for the second semifinal spot, with South Africa already qualifying with two wins.


Batting first, India set a record T20 World Cup total, thanks to significant contributions from Abhishek Sharma (55 runs off 30 balls, including four boundaries and four sixes), Hardik Pandya (50 not out off 23 balls, with two fours and four sixes), and Tilak Varma (44 not out off 16 balls, featuring three fours and four sixes).


Zimbabwe fought valiantly, finishing with 184 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs, highlighted by Brian Bennett's impressive 97 runs off 59 balls, which included eight fours and six sixes, along with a quick 31 runs off 21 balls from captain Sikandar Raza.
