Argentina's Hard-Earned Victory

Miami [US], July 4: After a challenging match in the round of 32 against Cabo Verde, Argentina's head coach Lionel Scaloni praised the performance of the opposing team while also commending his players for their resilience in a game that was anything but straightforward.

Messi initiated the scoring for the defending champions in the 29th minute, but Cabo Verde's Deroy Duarte equalized just as the match reached the one-hour mark. The 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha made several crucial saves to keep Argentina at bay until Lisandro Martinez scored in the 92nd minute, only for Sidny Lopes to respond with another equalizer. Ultimately, an own goal by Diney Borges in the 111th minute secured a much-needed victory for Argentina, setting up a clash with Egypt in the next round.

Post-match, Scaloni reflected, saying, 'It was a very challenging game, and we must focus on the positives. This team never backs down. I must commend our opponents—Cabo Verde demonstrated they are a formidable team. Everyone contributed significantly, and it was evident that they left everything on the pitch. This is Argentina; we understand that nothing comes easily.'

He noted that the team faced setbacks at critical moments but emphasized their determination to fight for the win. 'Improvement is always possible, but it’s crucial that the team responded well during tough times. We consistently aim for the opponent's goal and play with passion. Many thought it would be an easy match, but we were well aware of the challenges ahead,' he added.

Scaloni also recognized that despite the victory, there are areas that need refinement. 'We can discuss whether our performance was good or bad, but this team does not shy away from taking control of the match,' he concluded.

Interestingly, this match marked Scaloni's 100th game as Argentina's head coach since his appointment in 2018, during which he has achieved 73 wins, with only nine losses and 18 draws. Under his leadership, Argentina has clinched the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 2021 Copa America, and the upcoming Copa America 2024.
