Argentina President Reflects on Messi's Retirement from International Football
A Significant Loss for Argentina
In a recent statement, Argentina's President Javier Milei expressed that Lionel Messi's retirement from international football represents a "significant loss" for the national squad, while also acknowledging the rationale behind Messi's choice.
During an interview on Radio El Observador, as reported by a Media House, President Milei emphasized that Messi's exit poses a considerable challenge for Argentina as they aim to progress without their legendary captain.
"The decision of Messi to no longer don the sky blue and white jersey is a tremendous loss," Milei remarked, while also stating that the choice is "entirely understandable."
He paid homage to Messi's impact on Argentine football, stating, "He has gifted us with so much magic."
Milei further underscored the magnitude of the task ahead for the national team following Messi's departure, likening the loss to removing "that ace of spades" in Truco, a beloved Argentine card game.
Additionally, he shared a heartfelt image of Messi in the Argentina jersey on his official Instagram, captioning it with, "Thank you so much, impossible man!"
Messi concluded his illustrious international career after debuting for Argentina in 2005, becoming the nation's most-capped player and all-time leading scorer with 203 appearances and 124 goals.
The 39-year-old's journey with the national team was marked by years of near misses, culminating in a historic victory that ended Argentina's long wait for major international success. After falling short in the 2014 FIFA World Cup final against Germany and the 2016 Copa America final against Chile, Messi led Argentina to win the Copa America in 2021, breaking a 28-year drought for a major trophy.
He then steered Argentina to FIFA World Cup triumph in Qatar in 2022, overcoming France in a thrilling final that ended 3-3 after extra time, with Argentina winning 4-2 on penalties. Messi scored twice in that final and successfully converted his penalty in the shootout.
Argentina also retained the Copa America title in 2024, adding another prestigious trophy to Messi's international accolades.
Over his World Cup journey, Messi participated in six tournaments from 2006 to 2026, netting 21 goals in 34 appearances, placing him second on the all-time scoring list behind France's Kylian Mbappe, who has 22 goals.
At the 2026 World Cup, Messi scored eight goals and provided four assists, including his first World Cup hat-trick against Algeria, surpassing the tally of German legend Miroslav Klose before Mbappe overtook him.
