Argentina's Preparation for the World Cup Final

On July 18, in New York, Argentina's head coach Lionel Scaloni emphasized the necessity for his team to showcase their best performance in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 final against Spain, scheduled for Sunday in New Jersey.

As Argentina seeks to secure consecutive titles, Spain, the reigning European champions, is on a quest for their first World Cup victory since 2010.

In anticipation of the final, Scaloni mentioned that Argentina has been preparing meticulously, analyzing their opponents and striving to deliver an exceptional performance. He acknowledged that Argentina's presence in the final is well-deserved, and they are committed to doing everything possible to clinch the title.

"Our preparation mirrors that of any other match, filled with enthusiasm for a successful outcome and a strong desire to analyze our opponent. We must bring forth our best version to achieve victory. Despite being a recognized team, reaching this stage is a testament to our merit, and we will aim to win the final," he stated during a pre-match press briefing.

Scaloni confirmed that all players are in good shape ahead of the final, highlighting the significance of their last training session. He pointed out that both Argentina and Spain employ a similar possession-based style, with only minor tactical variations.

"Tomorrow's training will be crucial, but all players are currently doing well. Both teams prioritize ball possession, and while there are some nuances in our play, our philosophies align closely," he remarked.

He also noted that Argentina has been analyzing potential World Cup opponents since December, not just focusing on Spain, as both teams are familiar with each other, and overanalyzing can be counterproductive.

"Since December, we've been studying all possible World Cup rivals; it's not that we've concentrated solely on Spain. Overanalysis can be detrimental. Both teams are well-acquainted with each other," he explained.

Scaloni praised Lionel Messi for reaching yet another World Cup final at the age of 39, calling it an extraordinary achievement.

"The way Leo has reached this final at 39 years old is remarkable. We must appreciate his contributions and the legacy he represents, along with this group of players who have brought us incredible moments," he said.

He expressed deep gratitude towards the Argentine players for their unwavering commitment to competing at the highest level over the years, describing their journey as inspiring and hoping to culminate it with another World Cup title.

"We owe eternal gratitude to these players from the coaching staff. Competing at this level for so long is a remarkable feat. We hope to win, but the journey itself has been incredible and serves as an example for all," he added.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez stated that his primary focus is on winning the World Cup final, sharing that he is relishing this tournament more than the last due to his improved performances. He expressed appreciation for his family, teammates, and the Argentine supporters, stating he will enter the field on Sunday with a smile.

"Winning is our main goal; that’s where my focus lies. Sometimes, I find myself emotional reflecting on what we’ve accomplished as a team. I’m thankful for life and my family. We must cherish these moments that are unforgettable," Martinez shared.

"I’m enjoying this World Cup significantly more than the previous one. My decision-making has improved, and I feel more confident with my feet. I’m eternally grateful to the Argentine people and my teammates. On Sunday, I’ll step onto the field with a smile," he concluded.
