Anrich Nortje Aims for Test Comeback Ahead of Australia Series
Nortje's Preparations for Test Cricket
Cape Town, South Africa - October 4: Anrich Nortje, the fast bowler from South Africa, is setting his sights on a return to Test cricket. He disclosed that his training commenced well before his selection for the national team.
Having last participated in a Test match in 2023, Nortje has been named in South Africa's preliminary 18-member squad for the upcoming three-match ICC World Test Championship series against Australia, starting at Kingsmead in Durban on October 9.
Nortje stated, "My preparation has been focused on red-ball cricket for quite some time now." He has taken 70 wickets in 19 Test matches and emphasized the importance of gradually building his skills with the red ball.
Much of his training has been self-directed, with guidance from national bowling coach Piet Botha. Nortje mentioned, "I needed to identify areas for improvement in my action and skills, and I've had productive discussions with coach Piet."
He elaborated on his self-improvement efforts, focusing on alignment and enhancing the reliability and strength of his bowling action. "I've been sharing my progress with coach Piet to ensure everything aligns correctly," he added.
Nortje's T20 Success and Test Aspirations
Nortje has established himself as one of South Africa's leading bowlers in white-ball formats, holding the record for the most wickets by a South African in ICC Men's T20 World Cup history with 38 wickets in 21 matches. He has also taken 56 wickets in 47 T20 internationals at an impressive average of 21.19. His standout performance of 4/7 against Sri Lanka in the 2024 tournament remains a record for South Africa.
Despite his T20 achievements, Nortje expressed a strong preference for Test cricket. "In T20, you focus on executing skills, but in Tests, you reflect on both the challenges and successes that motivate you through tough sessions," he explained. He is eager to don the Test cap again, as it has always been his dream format.
Nortje's excitement is heightened by the fact that he has faced Australia only once in a Test series, during the 2022-23 tour, which South Africa lost 2-0. He participated in all three matches, taking seven wickets.
He remarked, "We always aimed to correct our mistakes when facing them at home. It was a challenging series, but I learned a lot and look forward to performing better in South Africa."
Anticipation for the Upcoming Series
Nortje believes that the upcoming series will bring out the best in all players involved. "There's an extra spark and energy that emerges during such contests," he noted. "Everyone is eager to perform well, and this series is significant."
As the reigning ICC World Test Championship holders, having triumphed over Australia in last year's final in London, South Africa enters the series with confidence. Nortje praised the team's progress under head coach Shukri Conrad, stating, "The team's development over the past few years has been remarkable under coach Shuks. I hope to contribute positively to the team's efforts."
