Anna Muzychuk to Replace Humpy Koneru in Women's Candidates Tournament
Koneru Withdraws Amid Safety Concerns
In a significant development, Anna Muzychuk from Ukraine will take the place of Indian Grandmaster Humpy Koneru in the forthcoming Candidates Tournament set to take place in Cyprus. Koneru has opted out of the competition, citing safety issues stemming from the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which raises concerns about the region's security.
The tournament, which is crucial for determining challengers for the world championship titles currently held by D Gukesh (Open) and Ju Wenjun (women), is slated to commence in Paphos this Saturday. Despite reassurances from the organizers, Koneru, a two-time Women's World Rapid Champion, expressed her apprehensions regarding personal safety.
Earlier this month, a drone attack targeted a British air base in Cyprus, further escalating security worries in the area. FIDE confirmed Koneru's withdrawal, stating, "Humpy Koneru has officially withdrawn from the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026, scheduled from March 28 to April 16 in Cyprus. Her spot has been offered to the next highest finisher in the Women’s Events Series 2024–25 who has not yet qualified, leading to Anna Muzychuk stepping in as her replacement."
In her statement, Koneru emphasized that her personal safety is paramount. "After careful consideration, I have made the tough choice to withdraw from the FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament. No event, regardless of its significance, can take precedence over my safety and well-being. Despite the assurances given, I do not feel entirely secure under the current conditions. This decision is painful but necessary, and I stand by it," she stated on 'X'.
While Koneru may face a fine of 10,000 Euros for her withdrawal, FIDE has not yet made a decision regarding this matter.
